My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 40 and died from it at 47. Both of my sisters had breast cancer, so I was diligent about doing all the preventative tests. And my health was good for years…until it wasn’t. I was so surprised when I was diagnosed, my world crashed. My sister and husband were with me, and I could see the doctor’s mouth moving but I could not hear what she was saying. All I could think was “how and why is this happening to me? I did all the right things.”After my lumpectomy that found two cancerous nodes, my breast surgeon referred me to an oncologist, Dr. Yueming Chang for treatment. The first time I met her I left her office and told my husband, “I know I am in good hands”. She is amazing and stayed with me through 16 rounds of chemotherapy and 21 rounds of radiation finishing chemotherapy…so it wasn’t a question for me of following Dr. Chang to UConn Health. I’d follow her to the ends of the earth, I don’t want to see anyone else.
